For example:
When the bad thought of pride or vainglory persists in assaulting you, do not try to contradict him, for you will not cope with him (the devil).
In such cases apply what the prophet David said:
“I am like the deaf who does not hear; like the mute who cannot speak”; and carry on on your way…

Likewise, when someone starts a conversation with you that is not worthwhile and tries to pull you into it, instead of becoming angry, say to him:
“I don’t understand these things, my friend”, and continue on your way…
