Beware of too much joy (I mean outward joy and too much comfort, for these are a temptation even more difficult than sorrow. During this temptation the person relaxes (in the wrong sense) his spiritual struggle and diminishes his spiritual “nerve”.
 
Let us remember, in these cases, that no joy (I do not mean spiritual joy) is permanent, but that joys and sorrows very soon succeed one another….
 
Finally, let us also bring to mind death, which will one day put an end to both our joys and sorrows… So now, all that remains is our state: If we are with Christ, with Christ shall we move forward; if we join devil and his works, we will be dominated by him…
