Let us be a bit more specific:
The Holy Bible advises us to “depart from evil and do good ” (Ps. 33:15).
We have, my brethren, an unceasing war, a struggle, with our fallen nature (inherited from the first Adam) as our adversary; the enemy being our fallen and ancient man, the man of passions and sin.
We should be constantly running towards the good, overtaking, as I said, this adversary!
That is to say, to pass from one good to another good and “running” to pass the baton to the next good, just as it is done in the race of the relay…
Never leave vacant space, i.e. without the good.
And let us pay particular attention to this:
Advice:
When we see a passion, or weakness or a bad habit approaching us of which we are possessed, then, without a second thought, flee from it, without even discussing it with yourself; do not mention anything to yourself (your fallen self) so that you do not give him the chance to oppose it!
So, therefore, never enter into a conversation and bring arguments to your old self, in order that you might escape from committing the evil.
Instead, do as the Apostle Peter did, who – as soon as he realised the evil – he immediately (without a second thought) fled from the wicked company on the night after he had denied Christ.
Now, as regards our good self, which was regenerated in the font of Baptism, who received its new nature from the new Adam, that is Christ, who is in fact our good self; when we are about to do evil let us ask this good self, once, or twice, or thrice, to postpone the evil, till its final cancellation; however, do not discuss it with our evil self, as we wrote above in the “Advice,” which, I pray you, please follow and you will see that it works…
But in order to do good, you need not ask or stare agaist it, wondering, “Shall I do this good, or shall I not do it?” Do the good always, without delay or postponement!
